Before I came to Tokyo, I lived in Oita for 4 years. It’s very pretty, the people are really nice, and of course, the food is excellent. I even picked up a little Oita-ben.
I’ve played piano for over 20 years and can play songs just by listening to them.

- What do you think is special about GnoKids compared to other kids English schools?
- I think Gnokids places a heavy emphasis on learning English in a more organic way than other schools. Having a second teacher means students can not only hear natural English conversations, they also can hear a variety of accents and different ways of talking. I don’t speak English exactly the same way that some of my colleagues do, and I think experiencing that kind of diversity is important. We also don’t use textbooks in class, so rather than learning English in a rigid system that can often lack context, students instead practice in a more immersive way, with interactive projects and games rather than stiff textbook material.
- What is most important to you when teaching children?
- Having fun. English is not easy and a lot of it involves trying new things and making mistakes. I think that the more you see English as something fun and interesting, the more you allow yourself to learn. That’s why I love using games and other activities in class. Students end up practicing English without realizing that they’re learning. They just think they’re playing a fun game.
- What do you think has helped your students improve the most?
- As bizarre at it may sound, making mistakes. I think that if you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying anything new. It’s important to me that students understand every mistake they make is not failure; it’s a learning opportunity, and they just have to try again until they get it.
- Where are your favorite places in Japan?
- Before I came to Tokyo, I lived in Oita.
- What’s your favourite children’s book?
- When I was a kid, I really liked Richard Scary’s Cars & Trucks & Things That Go. That book always made me laugh. Recently, I’ve really liked the Gerald and Piggy books by Mo Willems. They’re about two friends, Piggy the Pig and Gerald the Elephant, and they teach important lessons like being patient and never telling yourself you can’t do something.
- What is your favorite Japanese food?
- Noodles. I love all kinds of noodles.
- What do you miss about the United States?
- I miss my friends and family. We still keep in contact online and chat sometimes.

- How often do you eat shrimp in Japan? Ebi-day!
