Lesson 1：Welcome to lesson 1 of our new project, The Very Hungry Caterpillar!

Welcome to lesson 1 of our new project, The Very Hungry Caterpillar! This project is themed around the popular book, and this week we started off by taking a walk through the woods. Along the way, students practiced identifying the various living things we found by asking “What’s this?” and answering “It’s a butterfly.” For our project work, we made a butterfly mosaic! We got practice with lots of useful phrases like “Blue, please!” and “Can I have some glue, please?”

新しいプロジェクト「はらぺこあおむし」の第1回目のレッスンへようこそ！このプロジェクトは、大人気のエリック・カールの絵本をテーマにしています。今週は、まずみんなで「森の中のお散歩」に出かけるところからスタートしました。お散歩の途中、子どもたちは見つけた生き物を指さして、“What’s this?”（これなあに？）と聞き、“It’s a butterfly.”（ちょうちょだよ）と答える練習をしました。プロジェクトの制作活動では、みんなで「ちょうちょのモザイクアート」を作りました！工作をしながら、“Blue, please!”（青色をください！）や “Can I have some glue, please?”（のりを貸してください！）といった、お教室で大活躍する便利なフレーズをたくさん練習できました。

This week’s lesson focused on adjectives to describe things. From dogs to monsters we answered the question “What is it like?” with descriptions like “It’s big.”, “It’s fast.” or “It’s scary.” For the project work, students sorted various images to the adjective they thought matched best, based on their own opinions.
Our phonics activity was magnet fishing, with either individual letters or short words on the fish that the students would read after catching them.

今週のレッスンでは、いろいろなものを表現する「形容詞（ようすを表す言葉）」に注目しました。ワンちゃんからモンスターまで、いろいろな絵を見ながら、“What is it like?”（どんな感じかな？）という質問に対して、“It’s big.”（大きいよ）、“It’s fast.”（速いよ）、“It’s scary.”（こわいよ）といった言葉を使って答える練習をしました。プロジェクトの制作活動では、たくさんのイラストを、子どもたち自身が「これがぴったり合う！」と思う形容詞のグループに仕分けしました。それぞれの個性が光る楽しい作業になりました。フォニックス（発音）のアクティビティでは、「マグネット魚釣り」に挑戦しました！お魚にはアルファベットの文字や短い単語が書いてあり、子どもたちは見事にお魚を釣り上げると、そこに書かれた文字を一生懸命に読んでくれました。

One of the most iconic parts of the very hungry caterpillar story is when the caterpillar eats through all kinds of fruits, but is still hungry! This week we practiced the fruits from the book, along with the phrase “Do you want some plums?”
Students got to make use of this question and answer in games as well as our caterpillar picnic pictures. There were different choices for each part of these fun food caterpillars, so they responded to each “Do you want some…?” choice with “Yes, please!” or “No, thank you.”

「はらぺこあおむし」の物語で最も印象的なシーンといえば、あおむしがいろいろなフルーツをたくさん食べるのに、それでもまだお腹がペコペコなところですよね！今週は、絵本に出てくるフルーツの名前を練習しながら、“Do you want some plums?”（プラム（すもも）はいる？）というフレーズを学びました。子どもたちは、ゲームや「あおむしのピクニック」の絵を作るアクティビティの中で、この質問と答え方に挑戦しました。今回の工作では、あおむしの体のパーツ（食べ物）をいくつかの選択肢から自分で選べるようにしたため、子どもたちは先生からの “Do you want some…?” という問いかけに対して、“Yes, please!”（うん、ちょうだい！）や “No, thank you.”（ううん、いらない、ありがとう）と元気に答えてくれました。

In the book, we count all the fruits that the caterpillar eats, so this week we practiced asking “How many grapes are there?” and counting them up! We played a fun “caterpillar race” counting game, and went fruit picking, counting up all the fruits in our orchard. For our project work, we got some practice with careful cutting by having students decorate and cut out their own leaf.
Our phonics activity this week was writing. Each student got a writing sheet based on their current comfort with writing and phonics ability. They were very focused and did a great job sticking with it to the end, even though writing can be quite hard!

絵本の中では、あおむしが食べたフルーツをみんなで数えるシーンがあります。そこで今週は、“How many grapes are there?”（ぶどうは何個あるかな？）と尋ねる練習をして、みんなで一緒に数を数えてみました！レッスンでは、数を数えながら進む楽しい「あおむしレース」のゲームをしたり、「フルーツ狩り」に出かけて果樹園のフルーツを全部数え上げたりしました。プロジェクトの制作活動では、ハサミを上手に使う練習として、自分だけの葉っぱのデザインを描いて、丁寧に切り抜く作業に挑戦しました。フォニックス（発音と文字）のアクティビティでは、「書くこと」に取り組みました。子どもたち一人ひとりの今の進み具合や得意度に合わせて、それぞれにぴったりのワークシートを用意しました。文字を書くのはちょっぴり大変な作業ですが、みんなものすごく集中して、最後まであきらめずに本当によく頑張ってくれました！

The very hungry caterpillar in the book eats so much he gets a stomachache! This week we practiced different body parts, and played getting aches and pains in them. Students asked “Are you okay?” and we responded with “No, my knee hurts.” Of course when you’re hurt, you need a doctor, so we did games and roleplays where students got to be doctors and help their patients with their various ailments. Even our caterpillar got sick, and the kids had to give him a shot!”

絵本に出てくる「はらぺこあおむし」は、たくさん食べすぎてお腹が痛くなってしまいます！今週のレッスンでは、体のさまざまなパーツの名前を練習し、いろいろなところが痛くなってしまう劇に挑戦しました。子どもたちは「Are you okay?（大丈夫？）」と尋ね、私たちは「No, my knee hurts.（ううん、膝が痛いんだ）」と答える練習をしました。もちろん、ケガをしたり体調を崩したりしたときにはお医者さん（doctor）が必要です。そこで、子どもたちがお医者さんになりきって、さまざまな症状の患者さんを助けるゲームやロールプレイを行いました。なんと、あおむしまで病気になってしまい、子どもたちが注射（shot）を打ってあげる一幕もありました！

After he finishes eating through all the fruits, the caterpillar in our book is still hungry, so he eats lots more different kinds of foods. Today we practiced some of those foods, and learned to ask each other “What do you like to eat?” and answer “I like to eat sausages.” We held a popularity contest to see what the most popular food was in the class, and students made a plate of food that they like to eat!
For phonics we played Kaboom Sticks! where student take turns drawing a stick and then reading the letter sound or word written on it. Watch out, though, you don’t want to draw a “Kaboom!”

絵本に出てくるあおむしは、たくさんの果物を食べ終えてもまだお腹がペコペコ。そのため、さらに色々な種類の食べ物をたくさん食べ進めていきます！今日のレッスンでは、その食べ物の名前をいくつか練習し、お互いに「What do you like to eat?（何を食べるのが好き？）」と尋ね、「I like to eat sausages.（ソーセージを食べるのが好き）」と答える練習をしました。クラスで**一番人気の食べ物を決める人気投票（ポピュラー・コンテスト）**も行い、最後には子どもたちそれぞれが「自分の好きな食べ物をのせた特製プレート」を作りました！フォニックス（発音練習）の時間には、**「Kaboom Sticks!（カブーン・スティックス）」**というゲームをしました！子どもたちが順番にスティックを引き、そこに書かれたアルファベットの音や単語を読んでいくゲームです。「Kaboom!（ドカン！）」のスティックを引かないように、みんなドキドキしながら楽しんでいました！

Special Lesson 2：Our special lesson this time was about our gardens!

Our special lesson this time was about our gardens! We practiced all the activities you might do in your garden, like “climb a tree” or “water the flowers”. Our question was “What do you want to do?” and student answered by saying “I want to catch worms!”
We played a game to get lots of practice for each of our phrases today, and finished off by making a beautiful flower.

今回のスペシャルレッスンのテーマは「お庭（gardens）」でした！「climb a tree（木に登る）」や「water the flowers（お花に水をあげる）」など、お庭でできるさまざまなアクティビティを練習しました。今回は「What do you want to do?（何がしたい？）」という質問に対して、子どもたちが「I want to catch worms!（虫を捕まえたい！）」と言って答える練習を行いました。今日学んだフレーズをたくさん練習するために楽しいゲームを行い、レッスンの最後には、みんなできれいなお花を工作しました！

Lesson 7：Lesson 7, as always, was our review lesson,

Lesson 7, as always, was our review lesson, so we went through all the vocabulary and phrases that we’ve learned in this project, and played several games to practice them. As we’re getting ready for the end of our Very Hungry Caterpillar project, it was finally time to make our own caterpillars! Your children used the socks you graciously brought in for us, and made some very cute caterpillar hand puppets that they had a lot of fun playing with. We used the caterpillars and the other project work we’ve made throughout the project to practice retelling the story ourselves. At the end of the story the caterpillar turns into a beautiful butterfly, so for our project work, students got to make their own butterfly!

レッスン7は、いつものように復習のレッスンでした！このプロジェクトで学んだすべての語彙やフレーズをおさらいし、いくつかのゲームをしながら楽しく練習しました。これまで進めてきた「はらぺこあおむし（The Very Hungry Caterpillar）」のプロジェクトもいよいよ大詰め。今回は、ついに自分たちだけのあおむしを作る時間を迎えました！保護者の皆様にご協力いただき、お持ちいただいた靴下を使って、とても可愛い「あおむしのハンドパペット（手人形）」を作りました。子どもたちは大喜びで、作ったパペットを嬉しそうに動かして遊んでいました。そして、そのあおむしパペットや、これまでのレッスンで作ってきた作品を使いながら、今度は子どもたち自身が「物語のストーリーテリング（読み聞かせ）」に挑戦しました！物語の最後には、あおむしは美しい「蝶々（butterfly）」に変身します。そこで今回のプロジェクトの締めくくりとして、子どもたちそれぞれが自分だけの素敵な蝶々を完成させました！

Lesson 8：This was the final lesson of our Very Hungry Caterpillar project.

This was the final lesson of our Very Hungry Caterpillar project. We reviewed our language again with some guessing games and musical chairs, and then we did our final retelling of the story from the book. Students used everything they’ve made from their leaf to their caterpillar puppets to their plates of delicious food and finally their beautiful butterflies! It was a really nice story and the kids did a wonderful job retelling it! We had so much fun with this project, and now we’ll be sending all their lovely work home with them, so please take a look at it at home! 今回で、楽しかった「はらぺこあおむし」のプロジェクトもいよいよ最終回を迎えました！レッスンでは、連想ゲーム（guessing games）や椅子取りゲーム（musical chairs）をしながらこれまでに学んだ英語をもう一度おさらいし、最後に絵本のストーリーテリング（読み聞かせ）に挑戦しました。子どもたちは、これまでのレッスンで作ってきた「葉っぱ」や「あおむしのパペット」、「おいしそうな食べ物のプレート」、そして最後に作った「きれいな蝶々」まで、すべての作品をフルに活用して物語を再現してくれました！とても素敵なお話で、子どもたちは本当に上手にストーリーを伝えてくれました。このプロジェクトを通して、私たちもみんなと本当に楽しい時間を過ごすことができました。これまでに作った愛らしい作品たちをすべてお家に持ち帰りますので、ぜひお家で一緒に広げてご覧になってくださいね！もしご自宅にこの絵本がある場合や、インターネットで動画を見られる際は、ぜひお家でも作品を使いながら、お子様と一緒に物語を振り返ってみてください。
